§ 17.12.050. Driveways.

  • All driveways installed, altered, changed, replaced or extended shall meet the following requirements, except that, notwithstanding Chapter 17.20, a legally existing nonconforming driveway may be replaced, repaired or improved provided the replacement, repair or improvement does not increase the extent of the nonconformity with this title or any other ordinances.

    A.

    Islands (street terrace area) between driveway openings shall be a minimum of six feet at the sidewalk line that is closest to the street. If there is no sidewalk in front of the property, then the six feet width shall be measured at a point parallel to, and five and one-half feet offset toward the street, from the street right-of-way line.

    B.

    Driveways shall be placed a minimum of three feet from side or rear lot lines.

    C.

    All driveways shall be a minimum of ten feet wide at the street right-of-way line and fourteen (14) feet at the back-of-curb, or at the edge of street pavement if the property does not have adjacent curb/gutter, unless approved otherwise on a case-by-case basis by the plan commission, based upon a recommendation from the street superintendent or city engineer.

    D.

    Driveway openings shall not exceed the following unless approved otherwise on a case-by-case basis by the plan commission, based upon a recommendation from the street superintendent or city engineer:

    1.

    For all residential uses, thirty (30) feet at the street right-of-way line and thirty-four (34) feet at the back-of-curb, or at the edge of street pavement if the property does not have adjacent curb/gutter.

    2.

    For all other uses, fifty (50) feet at the street right-of-way line and fifty-four (54) feet at the back-of-curb, or at the edge of street pavement if the property does not have adjacent curb/gutter.

    E.

    Vehicular entrances and exits to drive-ins, banks, motels, funeral homes, vehicular sales, service, washing, and repair stations, garages or public parking lots shall be not less than twenty (20) feet from any pedestrian entrances or exits to a school, college, university, church, hospital, park, playground, library, public emergency shelter, or other place of public assembly.
